What to Bring & How to Prepare

A little preparation helps your appointment go smoothly. Here is what every patient should know before arriving for any exam.

By Exam Type

Preparation by Examination

Abdominal Ultrasound

You may be asked to avoid eating for several hours before your exam so the liver, gallbladder and surrounding organs can be seen clearly. You may usually take essential medication with a little water.

A full bladder is often required. You may be asked to drink water beforehand and avoid emptying your bladder so the pelvic structures can be clearly imaged.

Preparation depends on the stage of pregnancy. Early scans often require a full bladder. You may be asked to drink water beforehand and avoid emptying your bladder.

A full bladder is usually needed so pre and post void bladder measurements can be taken. You may be asked to drink water beforehand.

Most musculoskeletal and soft tissue exams require no special preparation. Wear comfortable clothing that allows the area to be easily accessed.
